Aviation fuel

Aviation kerosene is the most spread aviation fuel worldwide used in modern reactive engines. Aviation kerosene is to some extent very similar to light arctic diesel oil; however, its qualitative characteristics have to correspond to different operational conditions. Actually, the only kind of aviation kerosene used worldwide, is so-called JET A-1. Its qualitative standards were settled on both by the operators of aeronautical equipment and reputable refinery companies (i.e. Agip, Shell and a number of others). When setting these requirements, technical norms both for civil and military sectors were taken into account. This agreed specification is stricter than the individual norms and is marked as AFQRJOS (Aviation Fuel Requirements for Jointly Operated Systems). At present it is already the 19th edition of them that is valid.

Aviation kerosene is a subject of very strict controls concerning the duality because no technical failure due to the unsatisfactory quality of fuel is acceptable. The qualitative requirements of aviation kerosene can be dividend into three groups fundamentally. These characteristics are judged: fuel purity, volatility and low-temperature characteristics, stability, contamination of undesirable additives and fuel stability. Every manufactured batch and every single delivery of aviation kerosene must be labelled with the certificate approving the composition and the characteristics of supplied fuel by the producer/supplier. To improve the utility value kerosene, suitable additives are added. In refinery these are, firstly, anti-oxidant and antistatic agent and furthermore corrosion-preventive and freezing additives and anti-freezing liquids.
